Maldivian has opened an office in Beijing to strengthen its commercial presence in China, giving the national airline a local base to work with travel agents, customers and business partners in the Maldives’ largest tourism source market.

The Beijing office will support closer engagement with the Chinese travel trade and the development of the airline’s services and commercial relationships across the country.

Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian, said the office would bring the airline closer to its partners and passengers.

“China is one of the most important markets for the Maldives, and today marks an important step in our journey here. Opening our office in Beijing brings us closer to our partners and to the travellers we serve. With the strong support of the travel trade, we look forward to connecting more Chinese travellers with the Maldives, and to welcoming them with the warmth of Maldivian hospitality from the moment they step onboard.”

The roadshow brought together representatives from the tourism, travel trade and aviation sectors, with participation and support from Visit Maldives Corporation. Discussions covered destination promotion, travel trade partnerships and opportunities in passenger and cargo services.

Dr Fazeel Najeeb, the Maldives’ Ambassador to China, attended as chief guest. He said the office could help develop tourism and aviation cooperation, facilitate travel between the two countries and create opportunities for trade and wider bilateral engagement.

Maldivian resumed scheduled services to China on 22 January 2025 after introducing its first Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft. The aircraft enabled direct connections between the Maldives and Chinese cities including Beijing and Chengdu.

According to figures cited by the airline, China accounted for more than 329,000 tourist arrivals to the Maldives in 2025. It remained the largest source market in 2026, with 317,524 arrivals as of 14 October, representing approximately 19.2 per cent of total arrivals.
