Yesterday, during the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Groups in Marrakesh, Morocco, the Governors of both institutions appointed Ali Hashim, the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority, as the Chair of the Boards of Governors for the World Bank Group and the IMF in 2024.
The Chair, which is rotated among the five main regions of the IMF, will be held by the Asia Pacific region in 2024. Governor Ali Hashim was nominated as the Chair by the Executive Directors representing the Asia Pacific region on the World Bank and IMF Board of Executives by unanimous decision. This is the first time Maldives will be serving as the Chair of the Board of Governors of the World Bank Group and IMF.
“It is a great honour to represent Maldives in the international financial and development arena. This marks a historic moment, as it’s the first time in 45 years of Maldives’ membership in the World Bank Group and the IMF. I am sincerely grateful to our friends and partners for their trust”, Ali Hashim commented.
The appointment’s primary duties would be chairing the 2024 Annual Meetings Plenary attended by finance ministers, central bank governors of the IMF and World Bank member countries, the IMF and World Bank staff, and management.
At the same time, the Chair of the Boards of Governors will act as the Chair of the Joint Committee on Remuneration of Executive Directors and their Alternates, as well as the Chair of the Joint Procedures Committee/Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency Procedures Committee.
