MTCC Launches New Ticketing System for Greater Male’ Ferry Services

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has implemented an enhanced ticketing system for the Greater Male’ general ferry service, aiming to enhance passenger convenience on key routes such as Male’-Villimale, Male’-Thilafushi, Male’-Gulhifalhu, and Male’-Hulhumale’. This updated ticketing system has become operational as of today.

There are three payment options available for the Greater Male’ Region ferry services. Passengers can opt to scan QR tickets using the RTL mobile app or website. Alternatively, they can present paper QR tickets at the ticket counters in the Greater Male’ Ferry Terminals. Additionally, passengers have the option to make contactless payments through debit or credit cards (Mastercard or Visa) issued by the Bank of Maldives or other banks. This can be done by tapping the cards on a validator installed at the terminals.

To assist passengers in understanding the QR ticketing process, a tutorial video demonstrating the procedure will be uploaded on RTL’s YouTube and social media platforms. The RTL travel app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. To use QR tickets, passengers need to go to the ferry and scan them using the designated validation machine. The RTL travel app or website allows passengers to check up to 10 tickets. Single trip and journey QR tickets remain valid for up to 7 days from the purchase date, while multiple journey tickets can be used within 30 days. It is essential to note that QR tickets for the Greater Male’ region are applicable only for the designated route.

Despite the changes in the ticketing system, it is crucial to highlight that specific groups will continue to enjoy the ferry service free of charge. This includes individuals aged 65 and above and children under the age of 3, provided they can provide valid ID cards. Furthermore, individuals with special needs can travel at no cost by displaying the card issued by the National Social Protection (NSPA). School children in uniform and college or university students are also eligible for complimentary rides by presenting their student cards.

Customers can continue using their existing travel cards until December 30, 2023. However, these cards won’t be able to top up after 1st December 2023. Any remaining balances can be refunded if requested before 31st January 2024. MTCC season passes can be used until expiry dates, but no new passes will be issued afterwards. For ferry routes in the RTL Greater Male’ Region, customers are advised to refer to the RTL website and travel app.
