MTCC Signs Agreement to Connect Four Islands in Laamu Atoll by Causeways

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has signed agreements with the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure with building causeways to connect L. Hithadhoo and L. Kunahandhoo as well as L. Dhanbidhoo and L. Kalaidhoo.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim and Director General of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Fathimath Shaana Farooq signed the agreements.

As per the agreements, MTCC will be building a causeway connecting Hithadhoo and Kunahandhoo. The causeway will run through the uninhabited island of Mendhoo situated between the two islands. This project is expected to be completed with in one and a half years and is valued at USD 5.3 million.

MTCC will also construct a causeway between Dhanbidhoo and Kalaidhoo in one year and eight months at a cost of USD 9.4 million. As part of the project, MTCC will be building three bridges, a revetment, and roads.

Hithadhoo has a population of 1,100 people and several historical sites. Mendhoo is leased to a private party for agriculture, while Kunahandhoo has 800 residents who rely on fishing and farming. Meanwhile, Kalaidhoo has a population of over 1,000 people and is connected to Isdhoo by land. Dhanbidhoo has a population of over 1,000 people, and both islands are historically significant as well.
