MVR 73.2 million received as Green tax

Ministry of Finance revealed that the government has received MVR 73.2 million as a green tax in November 2019

Monthly green fund report published by MMA stated that the government earned MVR 73.2 million as a green tax in November 2019, while MVR 29.9 million was spent on Environmental projects in November 2019. According to the report, the highest number of green tax was received from tourist resorts (MVR 67,591,661.32 ) Guesthouses ( MVR 2,164,020.36 ) deposited the second-highest amount of green tax with MVR 2,164,020.36, following hotels (MVR 1,160,036.04 ) At the same time liveaboards/vessels contribute MVR 2,235,894.44 as a green tax.

Green Tax is a tax that encourages people not to harm the environment or to help pay for things that are good for the environment. Green tax is a tax payable by tourists who stay in tourist resorts, tourist hotels and tourist vessels.

Green tax is payable at the rate of 6 United States Dollars per day of stay from tourist resorts, tourist hotels and tourist vessels, and 3 United States Dollars per day of stay from tourist guesthouses. Maldivians and resident permit holders are not required to pay Green Tax.
