Male’ Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Centre for Cultural Heritage to restore and maintain Ali Rasgefaanu Ziyaarai, the burial site of Sultan Ali IV who ruled the Maldives from 1557-1558.
The restoration project will be carried out under the guidance of the National Centre for Cultural Heritage and includes activities such as wall painting, flagpole repair, surveillance camera installation, and site decoration. The agreement, signed by Minister of State for Arts, Culture, and Heritage Mohamed Thoriq and MWSC Managing Director Hassan Shah, is valid for one year.
At the signing ceremony, Minister of Arts, Culture, and Heritage Yumna Maumoon emphasized the importance of maintaining local heritage sites in the Maldives and stated that it is the responsibility of multiple entities to ensure their conservation and protection. The National Centre for Cultural Heritage prioritizes the government’s involvement in maintaining such sites with the assistance of companies. For example, since 2019, STELCO has been responsible for cleaning and maintaining operations at the Old Friday Mosque and the Medhuziyaaraiy Shrine, including the upkeep of the minaret at the Old Friday Mosque and the cleaning of the limestone wells.
