National Fishermen’s Register on Track for July Completion

The Maldives’ national register for fishermen is due to be completed by the end of July, announced the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam. The register’s creation is a key commitment of the current administration, outlined in their ‘Week14’ roadmap.

The register launch took place at a ceremony in Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll. Its creation aims to professionalise the fishing industry and offer fishermen financial opportunities on par with other government jobs.

Furthermore, the government stated the register would integrate fishermen into the banking system, allowing them access to loans for investment purposes. The move is designed to streamline government support programs and subsidies for fishermen.

Minister Shiyam highlighted that registration teams are active in multiple atolls and cities, including Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Laamu Atoll, Shaviyani Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Addu City, and Fuvahmulah City. Teams will subsequently move on to Haa Alifu Atoll, Lhaviyani Atoll, Thaa Atoll, Male’ City, and Hulhumale’.

Minister Shiyam confirmed that the register would encompass all fishing methods. Despite the fisheries act requiring such a register, no prior government had completed it. This administration aims to provide comprehensive data on diverse fishing practices, including grouper fishing, recreational fishing, and sports fishing.
