Parliament of the Maldives has approved the bill on the protection of whistleblowers last Tuesday. The bill was approved by votes from 70 parliamentarians.

The bill was drafted based on Transparency International’s International Principles for Whistleblower Legislation and was accepted by the parliament on 10th December 2018.

The bill underlines the procedures applicable to reporting wrongdoing, the protection afforded to whistleblowers, the requirements on investigative authorities, and other procedures necessary to instill a culture of transparency and accountability and to prevent wrongdoings.

Moreover, upon ratification of the bill, a Whistleblower Protection Unit will be established to operate independently under the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM)

Ratifying a ‘Whistleblower Act’ is one of the government’s pledges for its first 100 days in office.
