President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that MVR 7 million will be allocated annually from the Maldives Green Fund to support environmental protection and conservation initiatives across the country.
The announcement was made in the President’s address marking World Environment Day on Friday.
The annual allocation will be provided in addition to the existing budget assigned to the environment sector and is intended to strengthen long-term environmental protection efforts.
According to the President, one of the most significant challenges in addressing climate change has been the limited availability of financial resources. The additional funding is expected to support a range of initiatives, including the management of protected areas and wildlife, conservation programmes, environmental research, public awareness campaigns and technical capacity-building activities.
The funding will also be available for environmental projects implemented by civil society organisations and schools, broadening participation in conservation and sustainability efforts.
President Muizzu said the initiative is designed to strengthen environmental protection mechanisms and facilitate the development of long-term projects aimed at preserving the country’s natural resources.
In his address, the President also highlighted the relevance of this year’s World Environment Day theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action”, noting its significance for small island developing states such as the Maldives, which remain particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The announcement forms part of the government’s broader environmental agenda as the Maldives continues to advocate internationally for climate action while investing in domestic conservation and resilience initiatives.
