President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed concluded their official visit to Kolhufushi Island in Meemu Atoll on Monday evening and returned to Malé City. They visited the island to attend activities held to mark National Unity Day.
The day is observed in remembrance of the spirit of national unity and solidarity shown by the people in the aftermath of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
On Kolhufushi Island, the President unveiled a monument raised in memory of the lives lost in the tragic incident 18 years ago. The President and the First Lady also attended the official function held to mark Unity Day and joined hands with the island’s residents in a show of unity and solidarity, remembering the devastation and lives lost in the 2004 tragedy.
During the visit, President Solih also met with the island council members and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), discussed pertinent issues, and inquired about their concerns.
