President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has concluded a four-day tour of South Thiladhunmathi Atoll, during which he visited 13 islands and held discussions with councils, Women’s Development Committees, and community representatives. The trip centred on addressing local priorities while advancing the government’s wider development agenda for the northern region.
The visit saw several agreements signed and projects launched across infrastructure, housing, healthcare, education, and economic services. In Kurin’bi, the President confirmed that the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to build a new health centre, which will expand services and eventually operate 24 hours. Plans were also announced for additional classrooms at Kurin’bi School and new sports facilities, alongside the inauguration of a Bank of Maldives ATM and groundbreaking of a fitness and recreation centre.
In Kumundhoo, the government pledged to relocate the harbour, citing long-standing challenges with its current location. Work is expected to begin within two months. The island also saw the launch of water and sewerage services, agreements for road development, and plans for expanded school facilities. A Bank of Maldives ATM service was inaugurated, and new projects in policing, health, and recreation were initiated.
Council representatives in both Kurin’bi and Kumundhoo pressed for further investment in housing, reliable energy supply, and waste management, while also raising concerns over school capacity and health logistics. The President assured that these issues would be given due consideration, while reiterating his government’s focus on practical solutions.
More broadly, the tour was presented as part of the administration’s Northern Integrated Development Zone strategy, with emphasis on strengthening transport links, upgrading harbours and airports, and expanding opportunities in tourism, fisheries, and agriculture.
The President also urged councils to play a more active role in maximising the benefits of decentralisation, framing local governance as central to achieving balanced growth.
