President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the establishment of the Fishermen’s Co-operative Society following a cabinet meeting where a proposal from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources was discussed. This initiative is part of the administration’s 14-week roadmap and is aimed at enhancing the involvement of local fishermen in the operations of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
In the coming days, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources is set to invite applications from interested candidates seeking to represent the fishing community on the MIFCO Board. President Muizzu will select a suitable candidate from the pool of applicants who respond to the public announcement.
In addition, President Muizzu has instructed the drafting of a comprehensive roadmap for the establishment of the Fishermen’s Co-operative Society. This strategic plan will incorporate insights from international best practices, thorough research, and expert consultations to devise a framework tailored to the Maldivian fishing sector.
The formation of the Fishermen’s Co-operative Society is expected to pave the way for more inclusive and efficient management of fisheries resources, ensuring that the interests of local fishermen are well-represented and supported.
