President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has departed for Baku, Azerbaijan, to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Accompanied by a high-level delegation, President Muizzu is scheduled to deliver the Maldives’ National Statement and engage in various high-level events, discussions, and bilateral meetings with other leaders.
COP29, taking place from 11 to 22 November 2024, is a critical global summit where nations convene to negotiate and implement strategies to combat climate change. This year’s conference places a significant emphasis on climate finance, aiming to secure substantial funding to assist developing countries in their climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
The Maldives, as a low-lying island nation, is acutely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea-level rise and extreme weather events. Historically, the Maldives has been a vocal advocate for ambitious global climate action. At COP28, the Maldives announced its intention to plant five million trees over five years as part of its adaptation efforts.
During COP29, President Muizzu is expected to highlight the Maldives’ ongoing initiatives and advocate for increased international support to enhance the country’s resilience against climate threats. The Maldives’ participation underscores its commitment to global climate discourse and its role in shaping policies that address the unique challenges faced by small island developing states.
The conference also provides an opportunity for the Maldives to engage with international partners, explore collaborative projects, and secure commitments that align with its national climate objectives. As the world gathers in Baku, the Maldives aims to contribute meaningfully to the global effort to combat climate change and safeguard the future of vulnerable nations.
