President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has been actively engaging with international leaders during the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Throughout the summit, President Muizzu held a series of important meetings with key global figures, reinforcing the Maldives’ commitment to international cooperation and sustainable development.
On Monday, President Muizzu met with His Excellency Wang Yi, the Chinese Head of Delegation to UNGA 79 and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The discussions highlighted the deepening relationship between the Maldives and China, focusing on ongoing agreements and collaborative projects. The President expressed his gratitude for China’s substantial support in developing the Maldives’ tourism sector, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy. In response, Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s dedication to expanding cooperation across various sectors, particularly emphasising joint efforts in climate change and adaptation strategies.
President Muizzu also engaged in a significant dialogue with His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait and Head of the Kuwaiti Delegation to UNGA 79. He extended his appreciation for Kuwait’s continued support, especially in the health sector, and outlined the Maldives’ development agenda. Key areas identified for further assistance included the enhancement of the nation’s transportation infrastructure. Additionally, President Muizzu invited Kuwaiti investors to participate in the Maldives’ developmental projects, aiming to foster economic growth and diversification.
In another high-profile meeting, President Muizzu convened with Her Excellency Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Both leaders praised the robust and dynamic relations between the European Union and the Maldives, expressing a mutual interest in deepening diplomatic ties. President Muizzu presented the Maldives’ development priorities, seeking increased support to advance national progress. A significant point of discussion was the 24% tariff imposed on Maldivian fish exports to the EU, which the President highlighted as a barrier to market competitiveness. Her Excellency von der Leyen responded by reaffirming the EU’s unwavering support, particularly applauding the Maldives’ proactive measures in climate adaptation and mitigation.
President Muizzu’s meeting with His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, focused on the enduring brotherly relations between the two nations. He expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s ongoing support in various developmental sectors and identified critical areas needing further assistance, including fiscal reform, education, healthcare, and economic development. Matters related to the Hajj pilgrimage were also discussed, with the Saudi Foreign Minister indicating a willingness to consider increasing the Hajj quota for Maldivian pilgrims. Both leaders pledged to continue their collaborative efforts on shared interests.
In discussions with His Excellency Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman, President Muizzu reiterated his appreciation for Oman’s steadfast support. The dialogue centred on the Maldives’ development agenda, with particular emphasis on budgetary support, infrastructure development, and the training of local teachers to enhance human capacity. Both leaders committed to strengthening diplomatic and strategic relations, ensuring continued cooperation on mutually beneficial projects.
A notable meeting took place between President Muizzu and His Excellency Dr Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine. President Abbas delivered a poignant message to the international community, advocating for a ceasefire and global support to address the Palestinian plight. President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering support for Palestine, expressing hope for the Palestinian people to attain their rightful entitlements and international recognition as an independent nation. Both leaders discussed potential areas of cooperation, concluding with a mutual commitment to strengthen diplomatic ties and collaborative efforts.
