President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland KC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, on the sidelines of the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda yesterday.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu expressed his profound gratitude to the Commonwealth for its continuous development assistance to the Maldives. He acknowledged the Commonwealth’s substantial support in various fields, including sports, youth empowerment, education, the environment, and technology.
The discussion between President Dr Muizzu and Secretary-General Scotland covered several critical issues pertinent to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and other small states within the Commonwealth. The Secretary-General praised the Maldives for its strong and valuable leadership on key issues affecting SIDS.
President Dr Muizzu and Secretary-General Scotland explored avenues to further enhance the Commonwealth’s role in supporting SIDS. They deliberated on strategies to bolster the Commonwealth’s assistance, particularly in areas that would benefit the socio-economic development and resilience of small island nations.
Concluding the meeting, President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his Government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Commonwealth. He emphasised the importance of sustained collaborative efforts to address the unique challenges faced by SIDS and to promote sustainable development within the Commonwealth.
