President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed for appointment as the Maldives’ ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
The President’s request seeking parliamentary approval for the appointment was read at Tuesday’s sitting of the People’s Majlis. The matter has been referred to the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee for review.
The ambassadorial post became vacant after former ambassador Geela Ali was appointed Minister of Health during the cabinet reshuffle in April.
Dhiyana was appointed Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April, following the reshuffle. Her nomination to the Belgium and EU post now requires parliamentary consideration before the appointment can proceed.
Dhiyana has previously served as Attorney General during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration and as Minister of Gender during former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s administration.
