President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has renewed his commitment to protecting young people from the harms of tobacco, stating that the government will remain steadfast in its efforts to safeguard future generations in a message shared on social media to mark World No Tobacco Day.
In his statement, the President reiterated the government’s resolve to reduce tobacco use and nicotine addiction, highlighting ongoing policies aimed at restricting access and preventing uptake among young people.
He noted that the Maldives has introduced a series of measures aimed at strengthening tobacco control, including restrictions on electronic cigarettes and wider reforms intended to curb nicotine consumption.
The President also pointed to the implementation of a generational tobacco ban, under which individuals born after a specified year are prohibited from purchasing or using tobacco products. The policy forms part of broader efforts to reduce long-term demand and protect younger populations.
The statement also referred to emerging challenges, including flavoured nicotine products and targeted digital marketing strategies that use artificial intelligence to reach younger audiences. The government said it will continue monitoring these developments and strengthening enforcement where required.
Alongside regulatory action, the government said it will continue expanding cessation services, increasing smoke-free public spaces, and updating relevant legislation to support tobacco control objectives.
The President called for collective national effort to support a tobacco-free society and reinforce public health outcomes.
World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on 31 May.
