In a press briefing held on the 15th of January 2019, MPL’s CEO Mr. Shahid Ali stated that they will be working on relocating the Industrial Port to Thilafushi in 2019. Mr. Shahid added that there are efforts being made on a policy level in the government.
The industrial port is congested with very little space for more cargo to be unloaded and the roads for the vehicles to move around has also been damaged, making it difficult to clear the goods out of the port. Hence, he affirmed that there are plans to renovate the broken roads and equipment and rearrangement of the port to make additional space, which will approximately take 45 million rufiyaa.
Due to these difficulties, Mr. Shahid clarified that the Male Industrial Port is not a suitable long term solution and that they will be working on moving the port to Thilafushi.
