Several Initiatives Carried Out by Villa Hotels & Resorts for World Environment Day

As part of a continuous pledge to protect the Maldives natural environment, Villa Hotels & Resorts planned several initiatives to preserve the environment and work towards a greener #OnlyOneEarth.

In the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, Royal Island Resort & Spa organized a schedule of events to pledge protection to the planet and celebrate World Environment Day. Initiatives included in the ‘Green Fest’ event schedule included island clean ups, a B. Kudarikilu Island to clean the mosque as part of an ongoing CSR project, educational talks about sustainability at the resort and tree planting at B. Kihaadhoo. In the theme of caring for nature and giving back to the environment, Royal Island, Sun Island and Paradise Island all contributed to each islands greenery by planting a number of trees around the islands.

The diveOceanus team carried out several dive surveys of the surrounding reefs in the lead up to the event and on the day. The underwater team were thrilled to find the reefs in pristine condition with little to no plastic found. The event proved a success and raised awareness while setting a conscious and environmentally sustainable example.

Morover, recognizing that sustainability starts at the core of the company’s practices, several departments of Villa Group joined together for a large clean-up at Thilafushi Island on June 3.

Focusing on the harbor and beach areas, the event aimed to collect plastic and rubbish to donate as recycling while raising awareness and encouraging protection for the environment on World Environment Day. The clean-up at Thilafushi covered 300 meters of the island, with a focus on the beach area to prevent debris and plastics from entering the ocean. All plastic collected was recycled and donated to WAMCO, with a total of 149.47 Ton collected on the day.

The year 2022 signifies a global historic milestone as it marks 50 years since the first United Nations conference on the human environment. Held annually since 1974, World Environment Day has grown to become the largest global platform for environmental outreach with millions of people around the world engaging in events to protect the planet. Recognizing the importance of environmental protection, Villa Hotels & Resorts pledge to maintain thorough environmental practices across all resorts and operate sustainable initiatives to help preserve and protect the natural environment to live in harmony with nature for a greener future.
