Swipe Named Official Digital Wallet of Visit Maldives

Bank of Maldives has designated its digital wallet, Swipe, as the official wallet of Visit Maldives, marking a step towards deeper integration of digital payments within the country’s tourism ecosystem.

The partnership was formalised at a signing ceremony held at the Bank of Maldives, with the agreement signed by Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives, and Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives.

Under the agreement, Swipe will be positioned as a primary payment solution for tourists visiting the Maldives. The collaboration is intended to provide visitors with a convenient and secure digital payment option, aligning with broader efforts to modernise service delivery across the tourism sector.

Swipe is a fully Maldivian-developed, multi-currency digital wallet built in compliance with domestic regulatory frameworks and international payment industry standards. The platform enables both local and international transactions and can be funded through Bank of Maldives accounts or through credit, debit or prepaid cards.

Since its limited release in January, the wallet has introduced features including instant person-to-person transfers, QR-based payments, spending insights, shareable payment links, and simplified top-up and withdrawal functions.

The move builds on a broader strategic partnership established last year between Bank of Maldives and Visit Maldives. The institutions state that the collaboration is aimed at advancing digital transformation within the tourism industry, improving operational efficiency and strengthening the international competitiveness of the Maldives as a travel destination.

The designation of a national digital wallet as the official payment platform of Visit Maldives reflects increasing emphasis on digital infrastructure as part of the country’s tourism offering. As visitor flows expand and expectations around seamless transactions grow, payment convenience and security are becoming central components of the overall visitor experience.
