The Government of Japan Provides a Grant for “The Project for Upgrading of Mukurimagu School in Gan Island, Laamu Atoll”

The Government of Japan has committed a grant of One Million Two Hundred Twenty-Three Thousand Nine Hundred Forty-Nine Japanese Yen (JPY 1,223,949), (approximately USD 79,425 equivalent to MVR 1,224,733) for upgrading Mukurimagu School in Gan Island, Laamu Atoll under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme.

The Grant Contract was signed by Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Mr. Abdulla Shareef, Principal of Mukurimagu School in Laamu Atoll at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Education.

The Project will be implemented by Mukurimagu School with the assistance of the Ministry of Education. Under the terms of the Grant Contact, the project funds for the construction of 2 classrooms for each LKG and UKG children in Mukurimagu School. This assistance will enable quality education for children in an appropriate learning environment. The facility will also be utilized as an emergency evacuation shelter in case of natural disasters on the island.

The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives in order to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation and energy with a view to contributing to sustainable development of the Maldives.
