The Ministry of Economic Development has revealed that there was close to USD 1.6 billion in foreign investments in the Maldives in 2016.
At a session held at the Ministry of Economic Development, the Registrar of Companies, Ms. Mariyam Visam stated that the number of foreign investments being attracted to the Maldives is increasing year by year and that last year’s number is a 300-million-dollar increase from the previous year. Ms. Visam also revealed that 80% of all foreign investment proposals received in 2016 was pertaining to the tourism industry.
The ministry also revealed that work is ongoing to create better opportunities to attract foreign investments to the Maldives by improving the current foreign investment laws of the country.
