Ibrahim Mohamed Shareef, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has announced plans to upgrade the baggage handling system at Velana International Airport (VIA).
In a recent interview with state media, Shareef detailed MACL’s efforts to install advanced baggage handling systems akin to those used at major international airports. This upgrade is designed to expedite and streamline luggage inspection processes, significantly enhancing operational efficiency.
Shareef emphasised MACL’s dedication to improving user convenience at VIA, with several additional enhancements planned for the future. He highlighted the critical role of technological advancements in upgrading the airport, including the integration of data scientists to accelerate workflows and reduce costs.
Presently, the terminal at VIA, which was originally designed to accommodate around 3,000 individuals daily, is handling approximately 12,000 passengers on peak days. To address these capacity challenges, a new terminal spanning 78,000 square metres is under development. This state-of-the-art facility will feature modern amenities such as aero-boarding bridges and advanced baggage handling systems. Once completed, it is expected to manage seven million passengers annually, significantly alleviating the space constraints of the existing terminal.
In addition to improved passenger flow, the new terminal will include various food and beverage outlets, retail spaces, lounges, and other amenities to enhance the overall traveller experience.
The announcement by Shareef underscores MACL’s commitment to elevating VIA to meet international standards, ensuring that it can handle increasing passenger numbers while maintaining high levels of efficiency and convenience.
