Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam addressed the declining state of the fisheries sector in the Maldives, attributing it to a lack of youth participation.
Speaking at the Ocean Explorers event held at the Marine Research and Training Facility in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll, part of the 43rd Fishermen’s Day celebrations, the minister acknowledged the economic significance of the fishing sector but expressed concern over limited youth involvement.
He advocated for increased engagement to foster sectoral growth and highlighted foreign influence in fisheries.
The event aimed to inform students about efforts in Maniyafushi to establish a mariculture industry, featuring practical activities and research presentations by marine science students from multiple schools.
