The 42nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council convened yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland. The Session will continue for three weeks starting from 9 September till 27 September.
H.E. Ambassador Coly Seck, President of the Human Rights Council delivered the opening remarks. The highlight of the opening segment of the 42nd Session of the Human Rights Council is the oral update by Madame Michelle Bachelet, the High Commissioner for Human Rights. In this update, the High Commissioner spoke on the human rights situation around the world and the work of her office. She highlighted the threats of climate change and called for strong national and international commitment for action.
The Maldives reaffirming its commitment to continue to actively engage with the U.N Human Rights Council will deliver national statements under different Agenda Items. Some of the important areas this Session include the issue concerning the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Northern Rakhine State as well as the deteriorating situations in Syria and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
The Maldives delegation will also deliver a statement under the Annual Discussion on Integration of a Gender Perspective, Clustered Interactive Dialogue on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances and Truth, Justice, and Repatriation and Individual Interactive Dialogue with Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
The Maldives delegation led by H. E. Ambassador Hala Hameed, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, includes Ms. Hawla Didi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ms. Shahiya Ali Manik, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Mr Mohamed Shujau, Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives.
The United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations System made up of 47 Member States, which are responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.
