The installation of a new radar system at Velana International Airport (VIA) is nearly complete and is an S radar system as per Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL).
The radar system is being changed as the previous radar system is closer to the new runway, in order to meet the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The new, code F runway in VIA is 3,400 meters long and has a width of 60 meters. The run is being developed by the Beijing Urban Construction group of China. The land reclamation required for the development of the runway begun on 26th July 2016.
