United Nation’s secretary general Antonio Guterres has stated that world leaders has failed amid the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. As he believes that they are not putting adequate efforts against the virus.
In a press conference, Guterres has stated that the international community is being divided in a time when it is more important than ever to be united. UN Security Council has been working for a month now to negotiate a resolution that would focus on the urgent need for greater cooperation between all countries to fight against the COVD-19 pandemic.
Guterres has said “There is a disconnect between leadership and power. We see remarkable examples of leadership but they are usually not associated with power. And where we see power, we sometimes do not see the necessary leadership,”
He further added that he hopes that the world will overcome this sooner rather than later.
Guterres has made these remarks after US President Donald Trump accused China of creating the virus in one of their labs and halted US funding for WHO. He has also accused WHO of being “China-centric”, however the organization denied the allegation of being biased towards China.
While in the Maldives, the opposition party has said that the government should be held responsible for the community spread of the virus. Opposition party has also raised concerns over the first death case due to COVID-19 in the Maldives.
PNC party leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey), has said that the safety of the country is a responsibility of the President, hence President Ibrahim Solih should take the responsibility of the state the country is in at the moment.
He has also accused the government for discriminating with the testing of COVID-19. He has said that the government has prioritized those with political connection while testing for COVID-19.
Confirmed cases has reached 3.5 million, while in Maldives confirmed cases has exceeded 400. Several countries including China and US are in works to find a cure for the virus.
