Maldives Records 53% Decrease in Exports and 48% Increase in Imports in August 2022

Maldives has recorded an increase in imports coupled with a decrease in exports during August 2022, compared to the same period last year.

As per the monthly statistics released by Maldives Custom Service, Maldives exported MVR 115 million in commodities during the month of August 2022. This is a 53 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.

Major exported commodities include MVR 48 million in skipjack tuna and MVR 29 million in frozen skipjack or stripe-bellied bonito.

Top Exporting Countries:

  • Germany: MVR 27 million
  • Mauritius: MVR 23 million
  • UK: MVR 19 million
  • Bangladesh: 10 million
  • India: MVR 7 million

Meanwhile, Maldives imported MVR 4.8 billion in commodities during the month of August 2022. This is a 48 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Top Importing Countries:

  • Oman: MVR 1.1 billion
  • India: MVR 722 million
  • China: MVR 510 million
  • UAE: MVR 466 million
  • Singapore: MVR 402 million

Maldives Customs Service further recorded revenue of MVR 391 million during August 2022, which is a 36 percent increase from the same period last year.
