The Addu City Council has opened the Eedhigali Tourism Zone in Hithadhoo, Addu City, for investors to develop tourism infrastructure in the southern atoll.
Covering approximately 21,000 acres, the Eedhigali Tourism Zone has been designated for both domestic and international investors to establish tourism facilities. The council’s announcement highlighted plans for leasing the area for 50 years, with a focus on constructing a city hotel and associated tourism amenities.
Prospective investors are invited to submit bids starting today, with the bidding window closing at 12:30 pm on the 21st of this month. Bids will be reviewed and accepted at 10:00 am on the 15th of the following month at the Secretariat of Addu City Council.
The introduction of the Addu Coastal Tourism Development Plan by the Ministry of Tourism last month has set the stage for this initiative. As part of this plan, the government pledges to realise the development of 6,000 beds in Addu, a commitment made during Muizzu’s presidential election campaign. Additionally, it is estimated that this venture will generate around 10,000 employment opportunities.
Moreover, the revival of the Shangri-La Villingili Resort, which had previously ceased operations in Addu, is part of the broader tourism strategy.
The tourism development blueprint for Addu includes the establishment of a cultural village, a wellness zone, and the designation of marine protected areas. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish a hospitality school in the atoll.
