Representatives of the Maldives and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have engaged in discussions to explore potential funding for multiple development projects within the Maldives under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. This follows a meeting between the Abu Dhabi Fund’s Director General, H.E Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, and Maldives’ Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, who is currently on an official visit to the UAE.
Minister Zameer described the discussions as “constructive,” adding, “Conveyed appreciation for the generous support and assistance provided by the Government of UAE to the Maldives and discussed further cooperation with the Fund.”
A press release from the Maldives’ Foreign Ministry highlights Minister Zameer’s particular gratitude for UAE support in the extension of Velana International Airport. This, he noted, will significantly improve connectivity and boost tourist arrivals, bolstering the Maldives’ economy.
He also emphasized the development of the Maafaru International Airport project, and its expansion, stating this would create further opportunities for investment cooperation.
Minister Zameer was joined at the meeting by Additional Secretary of the Ministry Shiruzimath Sameer, Deputy Ambassador of the Maldivian Embassy in Abu Dhabi Hassan Waheed, and Embassy Counsellor Moomina Ibrahim.
