Key Markets
China continues to lead as the top source market with 212,546 arrivals, accounting for 14.6% of the total. Russia (10.9%) and the UK (8.5%) also contributed significantly, while other European markets, including Germany (103,226 arrivals) and Italy (105,176 arrivals), have also played a key role in boosting the Maldives’ tourism numbers.
India also remains a crucial source of visitors, contributing 6.0% of the total arrivals.
September Performance
Despite being outside the peak season, September maintained a strong influx of visitors. While peak season months such as January and February have traditionally seen the highest visitor numbers (192,385 and 217,392 arrivals, respectively, in 2024), September remains significant in maintaining the overall growth momentum.
Tourism Infrastructure
As of late September 2024, there were 62,864 operational beds across the Maldives’ tourism facilities. Resorts remain the dominant accommodation type, providing over 44,000 beds, while guesthouses offer a more affordable option with 14,000 beds across 887 properties. Safari vessels and hotels also contribute to the island nation’s diverse hospitality offerings.
Outlook for 2024
With the high season approaching, tourism officials expect continued growth, potentially setting a new record in 2024. The Maldivian government aims to attract 2 million tourists in 2024, building on the momentum of already hosting 1 million tourists this year. Efforts are intensifying to further boost tourist numbers, with a strong focus on strategic marketing.
