The Government of the Maldives has signed a Letter of Exchange Agreement with Australia to receive key technical guidance and assistance in formulating a 20-year National Development Plan. The agreement was signed during an event at the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development on Thursday.
Under the agreement, the Australian government has committed AUD 900,000 (MVR 9.4 million) in assistance. This support will be provided as part of the UNDP Integrated Governance Project, aimed at promoting sustainable development and good governance in the Maldives.
The Maldives cabinet had previously decided to initiate the process of drafting the National Development Plan last month. The plan, set to begin implementation next year, will be shaped through extensive consultations with the public, political parties, associations, stakeholders, and experts to ensure it reflects the aspirations of all citizens.
President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the plan aligns with the Constitution and is implemented through laws that provide it with legal standing and protection. The President emphasised that the plan will focus on the vision of the Maldives for the next 20 years, with the full participation of the people.
As part of the drafting process, consultations will be held across all islands, allowing citizens to express their needs and contribute to shaping the country’s development goals. The President reiterated that the plan will be guided by the voices of the people, ensuring that the Maldives’ long-term vision is built on collective input.
The agreement with Australia marks a significant step towards formulating a comprehensive National Development Plan that will guide the country’s progress over the next two decades.
