Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, stressed the critical role of new technologies and innovations in advancing sustainable fishing at the Global Ocean Development Forum held in Shandong, China. Representing the Maldives, Minister Shiyam underscored the nation’s commitment to ocean preservation, emphasising that sustainable practices in the fishing sector have become a central focus for the country.
In his speech, Minister Shiyam reiterated that the Maldives, as a small island nation surrounded by the ocean, is particularly vulnerable to issues impacting marine resources. The forum, he highlighted, aims to promote global collaboration to safeguard these resources, a mission that has gained heightened importance for the Maldives amid the growing global demand for fish products.
Addressing the challenges faced by the Maldivian fishing sector, the minister noted the impacts of climate change and unsustainable fishing methods, both of which threaten the livelihoods of those dependent on the industry. While the Maldives adheres to international regulations and prioritises sustainable fishing, he stated that these challenges require a coordinated response from the international community. He called for greater adoption of policies that promote sustainable fishing practices globally.
Minister Shiyam also acknowledged China’s support in boosting the Maldives’ fishing industry, particularly in light of discussions during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent official visit to China. The minister announced that these discussions have led to initiatives now being pursued to foster growth in the sector, with new investment opportunities available in mariculture and capacity expansion for fishing.
Through his address, Minister Shiyam reflected the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to developing its fishing sector while upholding environmental stewardship, urging international partners to work collectively towards sustaining ocean resources.
