Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon’s three-day visit to India from 8 to 10 January marked an important milestone in bilateral relations, with significant progress achieved in defence and security cooperation. The visit focused on advancing the “Joint Vision for India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,” a framework established during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024.

During bilateral discussions with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to enhancing Maldives’ defence capabilities. Minister Ghassan secured the handover of critical defence equipment, further supporting the country’s maritime security needs. Additionally, agreements were reached to expand defence training and capacity-building programmes for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), police, and other security agencies.
The visit also included inspections of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and the Goa Shipyard, signalling potential collaborations in defence infrastructure development. India pledged financial assistance to upgrade MNDF infrastructure, including the state-of-the-art Ministry of Defence building in Malé, and reiterated its support for enhancing maritime surveillance through radar systems and other advanced technologies.

The achievements during Defence Minister Ghassan’s visit illustrates the growing importance of Maldives-India defence ties. The Maldives’ vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) faces multiple security challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing, and drug smuggling.
