The government has announced that AgroNat Company, a state-owned enterprise established to support the agriculture sector, will resume operations with a revised plan. The decision comes after the Cabinet reversed its earlier move to dissolve the company.
Agriculture Minister Dr Mariam Mariya confirmed that AgroNat will continue to function as a separate entity under the oversight of the Ministry of Agriculture. The company’s existing employees and management structure will remain in place.
AgroNat’s renewed focus will prioritise ensuring food security. In its initial phase, the company plans to implement small-scale projects aimed at helping farmers generate income. One of the key initiatives includes reintroducing agri boats, which were previously inactive. These boats will be used to purchase produce from farmers and distribute it across the country.
Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture intends to introduce training programmes to help farmers manage plant diseases and improve agricultural practices. The minister highlighted the challenges faced by farmers, particularly young women, in accessing markets for their produce. The agri boats are expected to help address this issue by providing a reliable means of distribution.
Mariya further stated that AgroNat will train individuals within farming communities to support local farmers in tackling agricultural challenges.
Since its inception, AgroNat has faced accusations of financial mismanagement, with several projects failing despite substantial investments. The new plan aims to address these concerns while promoting sustainable agricultural development.
