Parliament has approved President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s nominations for non-resident ambassadors to the Philippines, Spain, and New Zealand.
The endorsed nominations include Maldives’ High Commissioner to Malaysia, Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed, who will also serve as the non-resident Ambassador to the Philippines. Additionally, Iruthisham Adam, the current High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been appointed as the non-resident Ambassador to France. Meanwhile, Mohamed Luveiz, Maldives’ High Commissioner to Singapore, will also take on the role of non-resident High Commissioner to New Zealand.
The Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee had earlier reviewed the nominations and recommended their approval. During Wednesday’s parliamentary sitting, 54 lawmakers voted in favour of confirming the appointments.
Under the Foreign Service Act, the president must obtain parliamentary approval before appointing ambassadors and high commissioners to Maldives’ foreign missions.
