Tobacco Use to Be Banned for Those Born On or After 1 Jan 2007

The Maldivian government has decided to implement a generational ban on tobacco, restricting the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products for anyone born on or after 1 January 2007. The Cabinet approved the measure during a meeting held on Sunday, based on a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Health.

The decision allows enforcement agencies a six-month period to make legal and regulatory amendments, with the new law expected to come into force on 1 November 2025. It will mark the first time the Maldives introduces a tobacco policy specifically targeted at a defined birth cohort.

The Ministry of Finance and Planning has also been instructed to coordinate with the Ministry of Health to expand access to tobacco cessation services. This includes making quitting resources more readily available ahead of the ban’s enforcement.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had earlier used his official X account to gather public opinion on the age threshold for the generational ban. The move sparked public debate, with some calling for a broader approach starting from earlier birth years such as 2000. The final decision settled on those born from 2007 onwards.

In recent months, the government has introduced additional tobacco control measures, including restrictions on vape imports and use, and higher taxes on tobacco products. President Muizzu has also urged vendors to explore alternatives to selling tobacco.

While details on enforcement and penalties remain to be clarified, the coming months will involve updates to relevant legislation in line with the Cabinet’s decision.
