Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun a series of employee awareness sessions aimed at strengthening sustainability efforts at Velana International Airport (VIA), under its ongoing ‘Green Airport’ initiative.
The sessions, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment, were launched to coincide with the International Day of Zero Waste. The first session spotlighted the topic of “Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Hazardous Waste”, bringing attention to a key environmental issue affecting both the aviation sector and the wider Maldives.
Led by experts from the Environment Ministry, the session provided MACL staff with insights into the risks associated with hazardous waste and persistent pollutants. It also covered best practices in waste management, emphasising the importance of informed handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in line with international standards.
Participants discussed the broader role of corporate stakeholders in environmental protection and explored how airport operations can adopt more sustainable, accountable practices. According to organisers, the sessions are designed not only to inform but to create a culture of environmental responsibility across all departments at the airport.
The awareness campaign is one element of MACL’s wider ‘Green Airport’ framework, which seeks to embed environmental consciousness into day-to-day operations and decision-making. Further sessions and conservation activities are planned in the coming weeks, as MACL continues to align itself with national and global sustainability goals.
