The Labour Relations Authority (LRA) has confirmed it is currently investigating 2,457 cases involving foreign workers, as part of a wider government effort to address systemic challenges surrounding migrant labour in the Maldives.
Speaking during a programme on state media, LRA Director General Mizhathu Naeem stated that the authority, now operating under the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, is prioritising the resolution of these cases. She noted that the majority of the cases involve missing foreign workers, with investigations focused on identifying the causes of these disappearances and ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks.
According to officials, information on over 100,000 migrant workers has been collected so far under Operation Kurangi. Authorities have urged all foreign workers to update their biometric information by the end of this month, warning that action will be taken against those who fail to meet the deadline.
The LRA has set a target to complete ongoing investigations within the next month, as the government intensifies efforts to reform the country’s labour system and improve oversight of migrant employment practices.
