Following the presentation of credentials, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Ambassador Juan Antonio March Pujol engaged in discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, and economic development.

President Muizzu acknowledged the steady increase in tourist arrivals from Spain and expressed optimism for continued growth, particularly with the improved connectivity expected from the upcoming opening of the new terminal at Velana International Airport.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues of collaboration that would support the shared prosperity and well-being of both nations.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Spain were formally established on 25 August.

Speaking to the press ahead of the ceremony yesterday, Ambassador March Pujol expressed his enthusiasm to begin his official duties in the Maldives. He identified key areas of mutual interest for bilateral cooperation, including tourism, education, health, and infrastructure. Referring to the Maldives’ geography—where 99 percent of the territory is ocean—he also highlighted plastic pollution as an urgent global issue. Noting Spain’s advancements in recycling technologies, he expressed interest in collaborating on environmental sustainability.

“We can be part of the group that helps the Maldives and others address this challenge,” he said.

The Ambassador also shared personal reflections from his last visit to the Maldives in 2015, noting the significant transformation of Velana International Airport. He remarked that the upgraded facility, once fully operational, will be modern and well-equipped to meet increasing demand.

On the topic of Schengen visas, Ambassador March Pujol stated that if sufficient demand exists, Spain is open to establishing a BLS Visa Application Centre in the Maldives to streamline the process for Maldivian applicants.

Honorary Consul of Spain to the Maldives, Ibthisam Ibrahim Mohamed Didi, also addressed the media, highlighting her role in representing Spanish interests, assisting Spanish citizens—particularly tourists—and fostering deeper cultural, institutional, and business ties between the two nations. Appointed shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she described the position as both a personal honour and a professional commitment to enhancing bilateral relations.

Under her tenure, Spain-Maldives ties have seen notable progress, including the launch of direct flights that have improved connectivity and bolstered tourism. The growing presence of Spanish-managed resorts and businesses in the Maldives further reflects this strengthening partnership. She also confirmed ongoing efforts to facilitate Schengen visa access for Maldivians through BLS, which would mark a significant milestone in bilateral engagement.

During the event, Honorary Consul Ibthisam presented Ambassador March Pujol with a gift to welcome him to his new role.
