Under the project, MACL will oversee investment, design, and construction of the airport, in addition to reclaiming land for the facility. The company will also reclaim 26.5 hectares of land adjacent to Mathiveri for residential purposes, aimed at supporting community expansion.

President Muizzu said the project fulfils a key campaign pledge and assured that the airport would be financially sustainable while generating economic benefits for Mathiveri, the wider atoll, and the national tourism industry. He further pledged that the airport will be completed and operational within two and a half years.
