Dhiraagu has secured three international awards recognising the strength of its 5G network, with the honours presented at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, one of the telecommunications industry’s largest global gatherings.
The company received three Ookla Speedtest Awards for the first half of 2025: Maldives’ Fastest 5G Network, Maldives’ Best 5G Network, and Maldives’ Best 5G Gaming Experience. The awards are based on Ookla Speedtest Intelligence data and were presented during the global industry event in Spain.
The recognition reflects continued competition in the domestic telecom market, where network speed, reliability, and latency increasingly shape consumer choice. Gaming performance in particular has become a key benchmark as data usage patterns shift towards real-time applications, streaming, and interactive platforms.
Dhiraagu stated that more than 73 percent of the population currently has access to its 5G network. The company was also previously awarded Maldives’ Fastest Mobile Network for three consecutive years and Fastest 5G Network for two consecutive years, reinforcing its position in speed-based rankings.
The expansion of 5G coverage has been central to Dhiraagu’s digital strategy. As the first operator to commercially launch 5G services in both South Asia and the Maldives, the company has focused on widening coverage while positioning advanced connectivity as infrastructure for digital services, business operations, and public sector transformation.
International benchmarking through firms such as Ookla plays a growing role in shaping how operators market network quality. These rankings, based on user-generated Speedtest data, offer comparative performance metrics that are increasingly cited by telecom providers across markets.
Dhiraagu, formally Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun PLC, remains the country’s largest telecommunications and digital services provider. The latest awards place the Maldivian operator within global conversations on 5G performance at a time when regional markets are accelerating investment in next-generation networks.
As data demand rises and digital services expand across sectors from finance to tourism, network performance continues to carry strategic weight in the Maldives’ broader digital development trajectory.
