Efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure in Addu City are moving forward after Fenaka Corporation contracted Definitive Solutions to complete the long-delayed Central Power Station (CPS) project.
Under the agreement, the company will undertake the remaining work required to bring the power station into operation, including installing and commissioning the power generation engines. Fenaka said the new contractor will handle the outstanding components of the project in order to bring the facility closer to completion.
The project was originally awarded to the Chinese firm Dongfang Electric Corporation. However, the contract was later terminated after the project failed to progress in line with the terms of the initial agreement.
Fenaka’s Managing Director Mohamed Najah and Definitive Solutions’ Founder and Chief Executive Officer Abdulla Saeed signed the new contract for the completion of the project.
Once completed, the Addu Central Power Station will operate using engines manufactured by Anglo Belgian Corporation. According to Fenaka, these European-built engines are modern low-speed units designed to deliver greater efficiency and durability compared with the high-speed engines currently used in Addu’s power generation system.
The power station is expected to have a total generating capacity of 26.37 megawatts, which would significantly expand the electricity supply available in the city.
While Fenaka has disclosed technical details about the project and its capacity, the company has not revealed the value of the contract awarded to Definitive Solutions.
Najah indicated that completing the power station would provide a long-term solution to electricity challenges faced by residents in Addu City. Fenaka has set a target to complete the project by the end of next year.
The move represents another attempt to bring the stalled infrastructure project back on track and strengthen power generation capacity in one of the Maldives’ largest urban centres.
