U.S. Envoy Visit Signals Continued Engagement as Maldives Reaffirms Neutrality

Diplomatic engagement between the Maldives and the United States has taken on added visibility with a high-level visit that comes amid heightened global tensions and a milestone year in bilateral relations.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel met with U.S. Special Representative for South and Central Asia, Ambassador Sergio Gor, during the envoy’s official visit to Malé. The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, which have expanded over time to include cooperation in areas such as education, security and environmental resilience.

In a post on X following his meetings, Ambassador Gor indicated that discussions covered both bilateral relations and wider regional dynamics. He also met with Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon as part of his engagements in the Maldives.

The Foreign Ministry said the meeting between Khaleel and the U.S. envoy covered bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest, though no further details were disclosed. The visit forms part of a broader regional trip that also includes Sri Lanka, with meetings planned with senior leadership to explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation.

The timing of the visit has drawn attention against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Responding to questions at a press briefing, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reiterated that the Maldives will continue to engage with representatives of all countries except Israel, while maintaining a position of non-involvement in foreign military operations.
