Maldives Secures First-Ever Country-Specific Seafood Sustainability Ratings

The Maldives has received a new level of international recognition for its fisheries sector, as global sustainability ratings begin to differentiate performance at a country level rather than by species alone.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources confirmed that the latest assessments by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch programme mark the first time country-specific ratings have been issued for tuna fisheries. Under this updated system, Maldivian skipjack and yellowfin tuna have both been recommended as sustainable choices.

The ratings place the Maldives in a distinct position within the Indian Ocean, where sustainability outcomes vary across fisheries. According to the Ministry, the Maldives is the only country in the region where both species consistently receive a “Best Choice” classification, reflecting the continued use of pole-and-line and handline fishing methods.

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, described the development as a strong endorsement of the country’s fisheries model, which is built around low-impact techniques and long-established practices.

The recognition also carries commercial implications. The updated ratings are expected to support Maldivian fish processors and exporters in accessing markets that prioritise sustainability, particularly in North America, where demand for certified seafood continues to expand.

Alongside this development, the Maldives has expanded its certification coverage under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The existing certification for skipjack tuna fisheries has now been extended to include yellowfin tuna caught using handline methods, bringing the entire national tuna fleet under certification.

The Ministry indicated that these developments align with ongoing efforts to increase domestic processing capacity and promote Maldivian seafood under the “From Maldives” brand, while maintaining a focus on resource management and long-term sustainability.
