A new institutional mechanism to manage the Maldives’ territorial framework has been introduced, with Mohamed Muizzu establishing the Maldives National Territory & Sovereignty Office on 16 April.
The office, set up within the President’s Office Maldives, has been mandated to define the country’s territorial boundaries and oversee research related to national territory. Its remit includes ensuring that such work is conducted with a focus on sustainability and long-term governance considerations.
The establishment follows an earlier policy signal delivered during the Presidential Address to the People’s Majlis in February, where the need for a dedicated body to manage territorial and sovereignty-related matters was outlined.
The new office is expected to coordinate with government institutions and international counterparts on boundary-related issues, including disputes. It will also be responsible for determining the Maldives’ official baselines and maritime limits, as well as producing boundary maps and related technical documentation.
Administrative preparations are currently underway to operationalise the office, including recruitment and internal structuring. Once functional, the body is likely to play a central role in shaping how the Maldives defines and manages its territorial claims, particularly in the context of international maritime frameworks.
