President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today that MVR 3.3 billion in outstanding dues have been paid to local vendors over the past six months.
Speaking at his weekly press conference at the President’s Office, he said the administration is working to stabilise the economy, including by settling debts without defaulting.
He said that from 1 November 2025 to 23 April 2026, the government paid MVR 3.3 billion to local vendors and businesses for work carried out through various companies and ministries.
“This is for work done by the citizens. I have paid 330 million Rufiyaa in bills for work carried out through various companies or ministries,” the President said.
He added that payments are made to around 800 vendors each week and that a further MVR 260 million in bills will be settled before the end of the month.
The President also said the government has continued to service its foreign debt on time, noting that MVR 924 million was repaid over the past 21 days. This included a USD 524 million sukuk repayment on 2 April and a USD 400 million settlement of the India swap facility on 23 April.
“Therefore, within 21 days, we have paid off nearly a billion dollars in debt, without letting the country face any kind of default for the citizens,” he said.
