Maldivian’s first direct flight between the Maldives and Australia has landed in Melbourne, marking a historic milestone for the national carrier and a new long-haul connection for the country’s tourism industry.
The airline’s Airbus A330 aircraft departed from Malé on Sunday night and touched down in Melbourne, completing the landmark journey. Maldivian said the arrival marked another milestone for the national airline of the Maldives.
The new service offers a stopover-free connection between Melbourne and Malé, reducing travel time for passengers travelling between Australia and the Maldives. Flights between Melbourne and Malé typically involve transit through cities such as Singapore, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur or Dubai, with overall travel times often ranging from 15 to 20 hours or longer.
The direct service, launched in partnership with Luxury Escapes, cuts the journey to around 11 hours. The route has been introduced ahead of the summer holiday period, when outbound travel demand from Australia is expected to rise.
The weekly flights will be operated using Maldivian’s Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft, which is configured with 18 fully lie-flat business class seats and 246 economy seats.
The service, branded as the Maldivian Luxury Escapes Express, is available exclusively through Luxury Escapes, one of Australia’s leading travel agencies. The package also includes complimentary early check-in timed with the arrival of the direct flight, allowing guests additional time at their resort before standard check-in hours.
For the Maldives tourism industry, the direct connection opens a more convenient route from Australia, a long-haul market where journey time and transit complexity can influence travel decisions. For Maldivian, the successful arrival in Melbourne also signals a further step in its international expansion using wide-body aircraft.
