Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua has highlighted the dedication of healthcare workers and the role of Chinese-assisted medical support following a visit to Kinbidhoo Island, noting that health professionals continue to serve communities under challenging conditions.
During a two-day visit to Thaa Atoll Kinbidhoo at the invitation of the Island Council, the ambassador observed medical equipment and supplies provided through Chinese assistance at the island’s health centre. He noted the commitment of doctors and nurses in safeguarding public health across both Malé and remote islands.
The ambassador said healthcare workers on the island demonstrated professionalism and dedication in serving residents, earning his respect for their continued efforts in delivering care in difficult settings.
His remarks formed part of a wider reflection on community life in Kinbidhoo, where he observed Eid al-Adha celebrations, cultural performances and local traditions involving residents of all ages. He noted that the festivities brought together families, including those who had returned from Malé, highlighting the role of festivals in strengthening community bonds.
The ambassador also visited Kinbidhoo School, where he observed educational initiatives including a hydroponic growing system introduced through a previous project. He noted that students had adopted the technique and shared it with their families, contributing to wider community use on the island.
He described the example as evidence of how education can extend beyond classrooms and influence broader community practices.
At the island’s power station, the ambassador observed renewable energy systems, including solar power integration supported by Chinese equipment. He noted that such systems were contributing to improved energy supply and supporting sustainable development on the island.
The visit also included a stop at a local heritage site, which the ambassador said reflected the island’s long cultural history and ongoing efforts by residents to preserve it for future generations.
Reflecting on his time in the Maldives, the ambassador said development in island communities was reflected not only in infrastructure and economic progress but also in the aspirations and resilience of local residents.
He added that continued cooperation between China and the Maldives could support further development initiatives across island communities, including in health, education and renewable energy.
