Civil Servants to Receive a Minimum Wage Allowance

In preparation of providing minimum wage to civil servants next year, a fixed allowance has been allocated called the “minimum wage allowance.

The National Pay Commission and the Civil Service Commission, in a joint press conference at the Finance Ministry on 29th December 2021 Wednesday, shared changes to the pay of civil servants that will come with the implementation of the minimum wage. The allowance is fixed based on the rank of civil servants. The maximum civil servants will receive as minimum wage allowance is MVR 1,917.

Speaking at the press conference, Civil Service Commission’s Director-General Abdulla Saeed said the commission will begin work on incrementing the pay of civil servants by adding the minimum wage allowance on Thursday.  He also said the allowance depends on the current pay, and that there will be differences between civil servants of different ranks. “It is possible that there will be differences between different civil servants. Given that the commission has declared the maximum civil servants will receive as allowance, they can check for themselves how much they will receive,” Abdulla Saeed said. 

Mohamed Faizal – Secretary General of National Pay Commission said that with the minimum wage, the salaries of 11,828 civil servants will be changed.

  • The pay of 5,928 civil servants will be incremented by MVR 1,500 
  • The pay of 4,184 civil servants will be incremented by MVR 1,000-MVR 1,500 
  • The pay of 1,288 civil servants will be incremented by MVR 500-MVR 1,000 
  • The pay of 430 civil servants will be incremented by lower than MVR 500 

The minimum wage set are MVR 4,500 for small businesses, MVR 7,500 for medium businesses, and MVR 8,000 for large businesses, and MVR 7,000 for the public sector.
